Beyond San Juan: Why Northwest Puerto Rico Belongs on Your Next Island Adventure

For many travelers, a trip to Puerto Rico begins with San Juan—and for good reason.
Walking the colorful streets of Old San Juan, exploring historic forts, enjoying Puerto Rican cuisine, and experiencing the energy of the metropolitan area should be on almost anyone’s Puerto Rico itinerary. The historic city offers centuries of history alongside restaurants, shops, plazas, and beautiful views of the Atlantic.
But here’s something we’ve learned through our own experiences on the island:
Puerto Rico becomes a very different experience when you venture beyond the Metro area.
For travelers returning to Puerto Rico—or first-time visitors with enough time to explore—the northwestern side of the island offers an opportunity to slow down, discover incredible landscapes, enjoy beautiful beaches, experience smaller towns, and find the local places that make Puerto Rico special.
And that’s exactly the kind of experience we hope to introduce to guests at Ancora Living in Camuy, Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico Is More Than San Juan
One of the advantages of Puerto Rico is how much variety can be found within a relatively small island.
Leave the metropolitan area and the scenery begins to change. Along the north coast, Puerto Rico’s distinctive karst landscape creates limestone hills, caves, dramatic rock formations, and beautiful stretches of Atlantic coastline.
Continue toward the northwest and you’ll encounter communities like Camuy, Isabela, and Aguadilla, each offering its own personality.
Instead of choosing between seeing San Juan and seeing the rest of Puerto Rico, we think visitors should consider experiencing both.
Spend time exploring the history and energy of San Juan—and then give yourself a few days to discover another side of the island.
Make Camuy Your Home Base for Exploring
Camuy sits along Puerto Rico’s northwestern coast, surrounded by the natural landscape that makes this part of the island so distinctive.
Within Camuy itself, visitors can discover places such as Peñón Amador Beach, known for its dramatic volcanic rock formations and Atlantic views, as well as the Camuy River boardwalk and the town’s local food scene.
The area is also famous for the Río Camuy cave system, a vast network of caves carved through the limestone landscape by an underground river. One important note for travelers planning a future visit: the Río Camuy Cave Park is currently listed by Puerto Rico’s official tourism organization as closed until further notice, so visitors should always check its status before making plans.
But Camuy is only the beginning.
Beaches, Road Trips and the Northwest Coast
Head west from Camuy and the coastline opens up even further.
Nearby Isabela is known for beaches, surfing and snorkeling, with places such as Jobos Beach combining the beach experience with restaurants, bars, and surf shops.
Continue toward Aguadilla and you’ll find even more coastline to explore. The area is particularly well known for surfing and water activities, while Crash Boat Beach has become one of Puerto Rico’s iconic northwest-coast destinations.
And sometimes the best part isn’t a particular attraction at all.
It’s the drive.
It’s stopping somewhere you hadn’t planned to visit.
It’s discovering a beach you didn’t know existed or finding a local restaurant because someone recommended it.
That’s part of what makes exploring Puerto Rico outside the Metro area so much fun.
Come Hungry
Exploring the northwest isn’t only about beaches and landscapes.
For us, one of the best parts of traveling around Puerto Rico has always been the food.
There are restaurants, bakeries, food trucks, cafés, bars, and chinchorros scattered throughout the region. Some become destinations of their own; others are simply places you discover while exploring.
Those casual afternoons—good food, cold drinks, music, conversation, friends and family—can become some of the best memories of a trip.
As we prepare Ancora Living for our first guests, this is one area we’re especially excited about sharing.
We don’t simply want to tell visitors where to sleep.
We want to help them experience the Puerto Rico we enjoy.
An Especially Good Adventure for Returning Visitors
If you’ve already visited Puerto Rico and spent most of your time around San Juan, your next trip presents a great opportunity.
Go farther.
Rent a car. Explore the coastline. Visit smaller towns. Try a restaurant you’ve never heard of. Spend an afternoon at the beach without trying to fit five attractions into the same day.
Puerto Rico’s official tourism resources themselves highlight the diversity of the north and west—from the northern karst and caves to Isabela’s beaches and Aguadilla’s famous surf coastline.
You may discover an entirely different Puerto Rico from the one you remember.
We’re Building Our Own Northwest Puerto Rico Guide
As construction progresses and we get closer to welcoming our first guests at Ancora Living, we’ve also been working on another part of the experience:
What should our guests do once they’re here?
We’re building recommendations for beaches, restaurants, chinchorros, attractions, day trips, and some of our own favorite places throughout Camuy and the surrounding region.
You’ll begin seeing many of those recommendations here on our blog and throughout the Ancora Living website.
Some will be well-known attractions.
Others might be places you’d never find without asking someone who knows the area.
That’s the fun part.
Because while we’re excited for our guests to enjoy Ancora Living, we’re even more excited about what they’ll discover when they step outside the front door.
San Juan may be where your Puerto Rico adventure begins.
But it doesn’t have to be where it ends.
Follow the Ancora Living Journey as we prepare our Camuy vacation rentals and share more of our favorite places to eat, explore, relax, and experience throughout northwest Puerto Rico.
